Class Descriptions:

 

Friday Evening:

1. Asana and Sadhana to Calm Vata: 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm $40

Vata Dosha contains the wild and untamed element of air and the cold and subtle element of ether. It is the essence of movement. Once the creative fire is ignited, the wind of vata fans the flames. The subtle qualities of vata connect us with our more spiritual emotions and move us through the realms of inspiration. Because vata is so light and mobile, it is the first dosha to go out of balance. When vata loses balance, creativity and spirituality can instead become anxiety and psychosis.

 

In this class we will engage in movements that calm and ground  the air element moving it into its proper seat in the body, the colon. As long as the air moves down and out, then the mind and heart are open to receive inspiration from above. We will utilize hip opening, prop and bolster support, deep relaxation and balancing breath practices.

 

2. The Mandala of  Your Life: 7:45 pm - 9:30 pm  $40

Mandala means “sacred circle.”  Whatever enters into the mandala holds symbols of higher meaning. We will apply the geometry and symbolism of the sacred mandala to the most fundamental and repetitive aspects of our lives. This will  include the home, relationships and food.

 

The secret of Ayurveda lies in the combination of carving a sustainable routine with an attitude of positivity. Three questions that we will ask ourselves are: 1) what do you spend your time doing 2) how do you feel when you are doing it? 3) Why do you do it? Answering the question “why” or “for what purpose” assigns meaning/purpose and creates a positive emotional response to everything we do.  

 

In this class we will explore the possibilities that exist for us as human beings when our lives become a sacred mandala. Through the power of intent and the practice of disciplined action, we can remove the barriers that inhibit us from our dharma, or sacred duty.

 

Saturday Morning:

3. Asana and Sadhana to Invigorate Kapha: 8:00 am - 10:00 am $40

Kapha dosha is the combination of the earth and water elements. These elements combine together to produce a sensation of fullness and satiation, like a fruit coming into full maturity. This much resembles the maturity experienced on the spiritual path: “The three pillars of spirituality are contentment, compassion and tolerance.” - Baba Hari Dass.  

 

When we embrace the fullness of who we are, where we come from, what we have and where we are going, we are tapping into the power of kapha dosha. As a physical practice, this manifests itself as deeply mindful and embodied movement. A kapha invigorating practice is strong and stable in movement and rich and full of the luxury of breath.

 

When there is too much kapha in the body, the body can hold too much water, too much fat and too much mucus. For this reason, a kapha balancing practice includes detoxification through twisting poses, backbends/ heart opening and inversion poses. This class will leave you feeling detoxified, satisfied and present.

 

4. Skillfully Applying Ayurveda to Asana, Pranayama Meditation and Mantra: 10:15 am - 11:45 am $35

The five elements permeate everything in existence. The predominance of each element fluctuates based on our continually changing environment. Elemental predominance also fluctuates based on the shifting train of our  unfolding thoughts and desires.  Mantra means “mind protection.” Mantra communicates with us on a subconscious level realigning the subtle body with the elemental vibrations of creation. Each of the doshas holds a seat within the body that can be awakened and balance through mantra, pranayama, asana and meditation.

 

In this session, we will learn the seat of the doshas and their connection to the elements. We will practice appropriate breathing exercises, movements, mantras and meditations for balancing each dosha.  We will also explore the spiritual power of each dosha. We will conclude with a practice of particular sounds and meditations that awaken and balance these spiritual qualities.

 

Lunch: 11:45 am -1:00 pm Potluck!

 

Saturday Afternoon:

5. Kirtan and Storytelling: 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm Free  

Kirtan is an extension of Bhakti Yoga, or the Yoga of devotion. Bhakti Yoga increases the compassionate and content qualities of Kapha dosha. Devotional yoga gets people chanting, dancing, moving, and humming to the music being played. This type of chanting uses holy names to bring the divine into the body. In this session we will not only chant but also learn the origins of Hanuman, son of the wind!!


 

6. Applying Ayurveda to Your Food: 1:45 pm - 3:45 pm $50

What is a craving? When does it help us and when does it hurt us? When we discipline ourselves to eat cleanly and to act virtuously, our mind and body begin to crave it. When we impose no discipline or foresight, we gravitate toward those foods and activities which are most comfortable in the moment but don’t necessarily have any long term benefits. In either circumstance, momentum is on our side. We can use the science of behavior to help us by creating an environment that supports our best self.

 

In this workshop, we will explore 1) How to Create Good Habits in the Kitchen 2) What Foods to Eat When. (This is based on constitution,  time of day and the season of the year) 3) Specific recipes and food with medicinal benefits to counteract imbalanced doshas.

 

Additionally we will explore the 20 attributes  of the doshas and how this applies to food. We will look at the principle of “like increases like” and “opposites decrease.” When you understand the specific qualities and symptoms of a disease, then you can also identify the qualities of each of the foods that you put into your body and begin to make more intuitive choices about what will benefit your body the most at any point in time.

 

Lastly we will look at the science of how thinking and intention alters the digestive destiny of our food.

 

7. Detox into Spring: Releasing the Weight of Winter: 4:00 pm -5:00 pm $25

The body accumulates extra water and fat during winter  to generate warmth. This is natural and appropriate. When the warmer weather arrives, the body needs to release accumulated toxins stored in the fat cells.

 

In this workshop we will discuss simple and safe detoxification methods. Then we will create a specific detoxification plan and discuss its variability among individuals based on different constitutional needs. This workshop is for those looking to detox or those looking to help others detox.

 

Sunday Morning:

8. Asana and Sadhana to Balance Pitta: 8:00 am - 10:00 am $40

It is the quality of pitta that drives us forward passionately toward the things that we want. When this dosha is balanced, we can productively and passionately pursue our goals and develop the necessary habits to get there.

 

When Pitta is imbalanced, we may see only the things that we want and notice all the people around us who have what we don’t. Pitta primarily needs to feel satisfied and accomplished. Then it needs to be led to relax into itself and the moment.

 

In this class we will warm up briefly  and then shift into a series of challenging postures with longer hold times. The class will cool down with poses that are close to the floor, calm the nervous system and encourage us to surrender to the present moment.

 

9. Reforming Your Life’s Goals and Priorities: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm $40  

This is Part 2 of the workshop Transformational Thinking 2018. One need not have attended the previous workshop; they just need to consider what prior goals they are working on.  In this workshop we will re-evaluate our actions, goals and intentions.  We will discern which goals arise from ourselves in-harmony  as opposed to goals that arise from the structure of the superego. We will explore the balance between rigidity and flexibility in pursuing our passions and upholding our duties.

 

Each of the major concepts of this workshop ( goals, activity, intention and superego)  will be presented through the lens of the five elements.  You will walk away with inspiration and clear action steps for how to use the inherent power of the elements to create your  life and yourself in a way you love.
